Description:

Shirley Scott, the leading female jazz organist, is back with a never-before-released official live recording! George Coleman (ts), Bobby Durham (ds) and others join her for a hot night in Baltimore in 1972! Never-before-released official live recording by Shirley Scott, a leading female jazz organist! Featuring the powerful trio of George Coleman on tenor and Bobby Durham on drums. Guest vocalist Ernie Andrews joins on three songs. This album was recorded on August 20, 1972 at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore, Maryland, where it was first released. Born in Philadelphia, Shirley Scott was influenced by blues and gospel in the late 1950s and became popular in the 1960s when she incorporated soul jazz into her playing. She has performed with countless jazz giants, including Stanley Tallentine, Oliver Nelson, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Clark Terry, and Kenny Burrell, and has numerous albums on Prestige, Impulse, Atlantic, and others. The 10 songs on the album start with "Impressions," featuring George Coleman's hot saxophone, reminiscent of Coltrane, followed by "Never Can Say Goodbye," a big hit for the Jackson 5 a year before this recording, and finally, the blues and pop singer Ernie Andrews' vocals. The last song is "Never Can Say Goodbye," which was a big hit for the Jackson 5 a year before this recording, and the album closes with a number featuring the vocals of blues and pop singer Ernie Andrews. The 2LP set was remastered from the original tape reels and pressed on 180g weight vinyl. Liners include rare photos by Los Angeles journalists A. Scott Galloway, Don Schlitten, and others, and Raymond Ross, as well as jazz organ icon Joey DeFrancesco (died 2022), former Shirley Scott bandmate, saxophonist player Tim Warfield, as well as pianist Monty Alexander and drummer Bobby Durham reminiscing about Shirley Scott.
