Mars Komagatake 2014 Single Peated 1st Fill Bourbon Cask #1782 Japanese Single Malt Whisky LMDW Exclusive (2017) 70cl
This 3 year old Japanese whisky was bottled for La Maison du Whisky. Finally got to try it many, many moons ago at Whiskytalk Fukuoka 2019.
From the little-known Shinshu distillery comes a single cask Japanese whisky bottled for La Maison du Whisky (following on from the 2012 vintage released by La Maison du Whisky in celebration of their 60th anniversary). This peaty expression was distilled in 2014 and aged in a first-fill bourbon barrel until 2017, when it was bottled at cask strength.
Tasting Notes
Nose : major peaches and apricots, unripe white peaches. Quite nice. Reminds me of the famous Macallan 22 Year Old I had earlier (Afro Tanaka).
Palate : medium to full body, initial palate has light honey, mid palate has a very sweet and spicey profile, all peaches though, honey, back palate has smoked honey. Wow, pretty straightforward stuff and very surprising that it's a Koma.
Finish : short to medium, peaches.
Mars Whisky is a Japanese brand by Hombo Shuzo, known for its distinct distilleries and diverse whisky profiles. The brand operates the Komagatake Distillery in the high-altitude Japanese Alps, producing delicate whiskies, and the Tsunuki Distillery in the subtropical south of Kyushu, which crafts more robust, smoky spirits. Their whisky is often characterized by pure water sources, unique climates, and innovative techniques, resulting in smooth, balanced whiskies with notes of fruit, spice, and oak.
