A little bit of a Waiting For Godot aspect to this one, at least in my mind, as if this boy might sit here forever with bat and ball in hand, his pitcher never to arrive. As such it seems exactly right that he should be planted next to this well (font of life, and surely the designated meeting spot for many a thing), itself looking rather forlorn, empty bucket hanging. I could look at this all day and again tomorrow--and indeed our boy would still be here waiting.
