Underworld Chronicles: Three Yakuza Fables by Takashi Miike
The late nineties and early 00s saw director Takashi Miike make the transition from his origins in direct-to-video ‘V-cinema’ to one of the most critically and commercially successful Japanese directors on the international stage. A multi-talented director who would come to work in almost every established genre, it was his often outrageous takes on the gangster genre that first brought him attention outside of Japan. Three of his most notable Yakuza films from this period are collected here, in a landmark new box set.
Fudoh: The New Generation
Riki Fudoh is a high school student secretly operating as an underworld boss, leading a gang of teen assassins against the criminal world to avenge his brother’s death. Originally intended as a direct-to-video title, its unexpected theatrical success made Miike an international name.
Agitator
A gangland murder triggers a violent war between rival Yakuza factions. Mixing boardroom strategy with street-level brutality, Agitator showcases Miike’s sprawling visionÑpresented here in both the original and rare 200-minute versions.
Deadly Outlaw: Rekka
Following his mentor’s death, Kunisada begins a blood-soaked revenge spree. Fueled by Flower Travellin’ Band’s psychedelic soundtrack, this is Miike’s ultra-violent Yakuza vision at its most extreme.
Limited Edition Blu-ray Set includes restorations, commentaries, interviews, the documentary Electric Yakuza, Go to Hell!, trailers, artwork, and an 80-page book.
