This is the finest Makah-Nookta, Native American of the Northwest coast, I have ever had in my possession, and I have handled a fair number and looked at many more than that. Hard to judge scale from photos I know, but the weave here is just impossibly tiny and tight. Stunning. And the banded patterns show the most lovely soft indigo blue; the original more intense purple is visible on the interior. 1870s-80s; there is a very good section on the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture website that always helps me in dating these, in case you might be curious: https://www.burkemuseum.org/static/baskets/artists/trinket.html.
This basket shows a few instances of what appears to be age related damage: one area of loss to the cedar bark rim and a bit of separation of rim from body of basket in one small area, as well as a couple of spots of what seems best described as creasing to body of basket. All as fully documented. As photos show, the basket presents as pretty much perfect from one side (and it still looks pretty terrific from the opposite side too I think!) Stable and sound and not especially fragile, though I'd still handle it with care. Gorgeous color and patina, gorgeous thing.
