As I've said I am forever opening old spellers in the hopes of finding endpaper drawings or mementos tucked inside their pages--and occasionally my efforts are rewarded! And in the case of this one, dated 1833, it was not until I got it home and started documenting its pages that I discovered the woven paper heart tucked inside a spread toward the back. Small joys are the best. And I love that the "Boston Lion Circus" clipping is specific to Boston, where the speller was published, and likely where Miss. Hannah Reed lived. Great alphabet on that first inside page too, and then page after page of good lists of words. Oh, and the cover boards were reversed--at front is the back cover, upside down, and then at back the front cover, right side up!
7 5/8" x 4 9/16", 168 numbered pages. Lots of wear to cover and spine, but all holding together and pages inside are in good shape. Sold as found, with naive watercolor of a window or door, Boston Lion Circus clipping (with reverse that talks about the exclusion of testimony in a trial due to the man being an athiest; and which, from the citation of Boston Atlas, dates it 1832–1857, I think 1830s), and woven paper heart with nice serrated edges, all in very good condition. Plus a cutout flower and stem from what I believe is a piece of hand-printed wallpaper.
