It’s only rarely that I am really struck by an oil can, but this one may just be my new favorite object. I believe this sort is often called a “banjo” oiler due to its form, and one would release oil from it by squeezing/pressing the center (it feels like an old squeak toy to me—very satisfying!) I’ve found no other with wonderful  paper litho wrap decorating the sides, and with the aid of a magnifier I am able to read some printed text on it—“Funnel Piller Gun / Somers Bros / Brooklyn NY.” Somers Brothers, founded 1869,  was a lithography company that made metal tags for plug tobacco with great graphics, and tins known for excellent fonts and great patterns. I can’t find reference to any other “Funnel Piller Guns” but believe the “gun” is the oiler itself, of a “funnel piller” type.  The thumb press is surrounded by a sort of gray canvas material that is still both pliable and completely sound without holes or cracks. Really a very beautiful and from all I can tell very rare thing!
