I was sold on these just by their brown paper cover, with grease stains here and there to boot. I don't usually just on old recipe books, even handwritten ones, but I couldn't resist these, one titled "Cooking recipes" and the other "Cooking receipts," the latter stamped on the back by the maker of both: Alice Redfield Phillips (who I've found record for, 1908-1994) of Montpelier, VT. Chock full, and I believe written much earlier in her life than later (c. 1930s I would guess) and very much of that era--tomato soup, welsh rarebit, various sorts of pickles, chop suey, tapioca pudding, lots and lots of cakes and cookies. Often numerous recipes for the same things, seemingly copied from different sources, and a feeling of Alice aspiring to be more of a cook than she was, with a charming note (to self I guess?) at the bottom of one page: "I have never used any of the "soft" recipes except for the angel food cake."
Larger: 9 1/8" x 6 1/4", approx 30 pages filled front and back. Smaller 9 1/8" x 5 5/8", 7 pages filled front and back. Some pages loose in the larger and paper generally a bit brittle.
