Not exactly my usual thing, but I was completely seduced by this and could not walk away. It is a cigarette case, c. 1920s or so I believe, with a gold toned metal strap inside that is designed to be easily removed, such that it could certainly be used for other things. The material is some sort of hard plastic, celluloid or similar, but reads like etched glass, and for me this very much calls to mind verre eglomise patch and candy boxes of a century prior to it, as well as enamel painted Bauhaus era boxes and cases, and mostly explicitly the decoration on Grecian urns. The ground around the figures is painted gold from the reverse, showing milky white when the case is closed, but like etched glass when open. Photos give a good sense. Really very striking and pretty magical feeling.
4 3/4" x 3 1/4" x 3/8". Very good condition, reads bright and crisp. A bit of minor loss to the gold paint in one spot, center of bottom edge of lid and light general wear to the surface of the metal frame on the interior, all as documented. Snaps closed just as it should.
