I've got a special love for treen rattles of this sort, which I've seen described as puzzle rattles and whimsy rattles for their crown of thorns type construction of interlocking parts; no nails or glue here. This is a small one (rightly sized for a child), which I think makes it especially charming--as does the faceted finial at the end of the handle. And there are a handful of small, gently rattling beads (or whatever they are) inside, making for an especially lovely, soothing sort of sound when shaken.

3 13/16" l x 3 3/16" w x 1 1/2" d. Late 19th/very early 20th century I believe, which nice warm dry patina. Looks perhaps to be an old, well done glue repaired split to one flat facet--only seen by me with magnification and I don't think at all detracting. Sturdy and sound and lovely.
