This is a beautiful Polished White Opal specimen from Ethiopia set into a .925 sterling silver wrapped ring mount. It comes in a teardrop cut in varying sizes, qualities, and colors (depending on availability).
Ethiopian Opal is a hydrous silica mineral (SiO₂·nH₂O) known for its vibrant play-of-color, resulting from microscopic silica spheres diffracting light. With a Mohs hardness of 5.5-6.5, it is softer than many gemstones and requires care to prevent scratching and exposure to water, as it is often hydrophilic. Found primarily in the Wollo and Shewa regions of Ethiopia, this opal occurs in volcanic deposits and is known for its transparency, vivid color flashes, and honeycomb or hydrophane characteristics. Unlike Australian opals, Ethiopian opals can absorb water, temporarily altering their appearance. They are widely used in jewelry, often cut into cabochons to showcase their unique play-of-color.
