Ma Hailun is a photographer and visual artist from Ürümqi, Xinjiang, China, whose work moves between fashion, editorial photography, and long-term personal projects. Named by the BoF 500 as one of a new generation shaping contemporary visual culture, she has worked with clients including Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Maison Margiela, Nike, and Vogue China.
Uruklyn is her debut photobook and a deeply personal project.
The title combines two places that shaped her life: Ürümqi and Brooklyn. After moving to New York to study photography, Ma began to see her hometown in a new way. Inspired by how people in Brooklyn embraced their roots and identities, she returned to Xinjiang with a renewed appreciation for the place she came from.
Through her intimate, documentary-style photographs, Uruklyn offers a rare look at the everyday lives of young people in Xinjiang. Friends spend time together, ride motorcycles, skateboard, fall in love, and imagine their futures. The images feel personal and familiar, revealing a side of the region that is rarely seen.
At its heart, Uruklyn is about belonging—living between different cultures, influences, and identities, while trying to find a place to call home.
A tender portrait of youth, community, and contemporary Xinjiang.
