The symbol known today as the Valknut, or "Hrungnishjarta" ("Hrungnir's Heart"), is rooted in Norse mythology, first mentioned in Snorri Sturlusson's Skáldskaparmál. Hrungnir, a jötunn whose name translates to "brawler," was said to have a heart of stone "with three sharp-pointed corners." While this legend ties the symbol to Hrungnir, the truth is we’ll never know its original name or meaning. It likely predates the myth altogether.

The term Valknut, a modern label, connects the Norse words valr (the slain) and knut (knot), as the symbol has been associated with carvings related to death. But did Vikings use it for this? We have no idea. The Norse didn't leave behind an explanation.

Still, it's a symbol that evokes the mystery and power of Viking culture. Here in Minnesota, with our Norwegian, German, and Icelandic roots, we embrace these symbols—whether or not we fully understand them. They show up on tattoos, shirts, and home decor because, let’s be honest, they're just cool. History aside, we love a good Viking mystery!
