All supplemental CoQ10 originates in a crystal (dry powder) form. However, the crystal form of CoQ10 is not well absorbed because the crystals do not fully dissolve in the intestines and the body has limited ability to absorb lipid crystals. When crystal CoQ10 is dissolved in a lipid-based delivery system, such as in oil-based softgels, liposomes, micelles, and nanoparticles, its absorption is improved. However, there is still partial crystallization in these preparations.
