Serge Celibidacke is known as one of the leading postwar Bruckner conductors. In his Symphony No. 9 with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, for which he served as principal guest conductor in the 1970s before becoming chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic, the natural flow of the music is emphasized, unlike the extremely slow tempo of his later years. The broadcast recordings on this disc are a precious legacy of the music of Celibidacke, who was known for his dislike of recordings, and are indispensable to the postwar Bruckner performance.
