Welcome to the Follow Safe Hygiene, Health & Work Practices in Salon Environments course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in applying safe hygiene, health, infection control, hazard management, cleaning, emergency, and workplace safety practices in salon environments in line with organisational procedures and WHS requirements.
Following safe hygiene, health, and work practices in salon environments involves carrying out routine salon duties in a manner that protects clients, colleagues, and yourself from infection, injury, contamination, and unsafe workplace conditions. In real workplace practice, this requires workers to use personal protective equipment correctly, follow hand hygiene and skin protection procedures, prevent cross-infection, clean and disinfect work areas and equipment, dispose of waste safely, identify and report hazards, and respond appropriately to emergencies and safety issues. This is important because salon environments involve close client contact, shared tools and surfaces, electrical equipment, chemicals, manual handling, and potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and hazardous substances, all of which require consistent and safe workplace practices.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to select and use personal protective equipment, follow hand hygiene, skin protection, and sharps disposal procedures, follow workplace safety directions and warning signs, identify, remove, and report hazards, unsafe practices, bullying, harassment, and safety breaches, and apply manual handling procedures while participating in hazard identification, consultation, and risk assessment activities. It also evaluates your ability to minimise static electricity, use and store electrical equipment safely, prevent cross-infection between clients and colleagues, apply standard and additional precautions and skin penetration guidelines, clean and disinfect work surfaces and equipment correctly, dispose of single-use items, leftover products, sharps, waste, and hazardous substances safely, prevent blood-to-blood contact and manage blood or body fluid spills, change towels, linen, disposable coverings, and product-dispensing methods to prevent contamination, follow fire, emergency, alarm, evacuation, and first aid personnel procedures, clean and maintain salon work areas, mix and store cleaning chemicals safely, and apply WHS, infection control, cleaning, disinfection, hazardous substance, electrical safety, and emergency response knowledge to routine salon work practices.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can follow safe hygiene, health, and work practices in salon environments by applying infection control and cleaning procedures, identifying and responding to workplace hazards and safety breaches, using equipment and substances safely, preventing contamination and cross-infection, handling waste and emergencies appropriately, and maintaining safe, clean, and compliant salon work practices in accordance with workplace and WHS requirements.
