Lorin Hollander
Description:
All recordings for RCA and Columbia by Lorin Hollander, the undiscovered master of piano (8-CD box set). Lorin Hollander is an American master pianist who will turn 77 this year. This is the first release of an 8-CD box set featuring all of Hollander's recordings for RCA between 1958 and 1965, plus a Columbia recording from 1973, in which Hollander played celesta in Kirchner's own compositions. Born in New York City in 1944, Hollander grew up in a musical environment where his father, violinist Max Hollander, was the associate concertmaster of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Toscanini. He made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 11, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21. His talent is also evident in the fact that he studied with such renowned pianists as Eduard Steuermann, Olga Stroumiro, Leon Fleischer, Max Rudolf, and Rudolf Zelkin. His debut recording was made in 1958, at the age of 14, on the RCA Camden disc titled "Piano Discovery/Instructions for Piano Performance" (CD1), which contains 22 gorgeous piano pieces from Bach to Paderewski. In 1963, Hollander released his first concerto recording, a combination of Ravel's Piano Concerto and the world premiere recording of Dello Gioio's Fantasie et Variations for Piano and Orchestra with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Erich Reinsdorf (CD3), which was Hollander's full-fledged world debut. This was Hollander's full-fledged world debut, and the album (CD3), combining world premiere recordings of Ravel's Piano Concerto and Dello Gioio's Fantasie et Variations for Piano and Orchestra with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Erich Reinsdorf, was described by High Fidelity magazine as "an amazingly precise performance with bold and brilliant virtuosity from an 18-year-old pianist" and "a masterful performance of the technical piano parts in the works of Dello Gioio, who studied under Hindemith" (CD4). Hollander's lively performance of the technical piano parts in the works of Delo-Gioio, who studied with Hindemith," (Gramophone). (1/2) Sony Music
